Sabine Marcelis’ Candy-Coloured Dreamworld
Artist Sabine Marcelis is one of the most exciting names on the vibrant Rotterdam art scene, but she spent most of her childhood in New Zealand, a result of her parents’ appetite for adventure. They were flower farmers, she was an avid snowboarder. Her self-proclaimed journey to where she is now starts something like: “Aspiring Snowboarder Turned Designer: From the Slopes to the Workshop”.
After snowboarding-related health difficulties, she found herself at Eindhoven. Now, she’s known for mastering resin (her favourite material) as well as frequently working with glass.
“The resulting pieces, inspired by the elements air, light, and water, defy strict typologies of furniture design… Thanks to her sense of color and understanding of space, her projects are also starting to defy the scale of conventional design, encompassing fashion, interiors, architecture, and outdoor lighting sculpture.”

On her beginnings: “I’m a nerd when it comes to production methods, and I know how a lot of things are made. As a result, my friends would ask me to help them out with production or product development, especially for fashion accessories.”
Varmblixt: the highly anticipated collaboration between Sabine Marcelis and IKEA, featuring lights that bounce off the wall and her signature donut shape translated into glassware. Watch her walk through the collection here
On how people perceive her work: “I think people sometimes expect me to have a grand plan, or that I have some sort of color theory. I don’t. I work from intuition and from things I like or that fascinate me. But generally I’m not that interested in what other people think.”

Colour Rush! is an installation by Sabine Marcelis as part of the annual presentation at the Vitra Schaudepot, which reveals the collection of the Vitra Design Museum in a fresh light every year. Running from 14th May 2022 - 14th May 2022, “Sabine Marcelis has transformed the Schaudepot in one simple, sweeping gesture by sorting its roughly four hundred exhibits by colour. The installation shows the collection from new perspectives and produces fascinating cross-references between periods and styles”
Some advice to her younger self: “The biggest one is that it doesn't really matter that much. I used to put so much unnecessary pressure on myself, and it's really detrimental to your mental health to expect so much from yourself. It was an unhealthy way of working—every demand from every client or person was the most important thing in the world. I would do all-nighters to please people. Now, I’ve realized that people can wait. It's not the end of the world. And if something goes wrong, it's also not the end of the world. It took me probably a good five years to realize that. The biggest push toward setting boundaries was having a child and thinking, actually, this is what matters, not that client over there. They can wait one more day.”

Last week, we shared what we’d do if money was no object in the comment section. Truthfully, there were many heartwarming visions of what life could be like. We’re sharing one of our favourites here, but do peruse the comments for many more.
I just want to live a simple life in my small beach town of Morro Bay. I'd support our local businesses and create art to fill our galleries. I'd wander the land and linger in the markets. I'd sponsor young people to gain skills in their desired trades. I'd make sure everyone was warm and fed. I've traveled and I love it...and I have always loved coming home too. I suppose I'd finally put in that hot tub I've always wanted and get weekly massages. Simple, good life.

We've all got something we're naturally drawn to; having the courage to go all-in on that specific endeavour to make it a "job" is a commendable feat.
